April 16 Weekly Announcements

Hello Everyone!

I’m sending announcements twice this week: once using the old system I’ve used this year, and once using this email list. I’m hoping it gets through to more of you.

From Barb:

Dear Utah Youth Orchestras!
We’re in the final stretch!!
Stoke up & make your practice time FANTASTIQUE!!
Love, barb

UYPhil: Rehearsal in Room 272 at Gardner Hall. Austin Kruger is subbing for Debbie this week – please make him feel welcome!

UYPrelude: Rehearsal this week is at the Hilltop LDS church at 589 E 18th Avenue. Please bring a stand!
UYSO: Rehearsal is in room 272 from 9:00-11:30.

Upcoming Concert info:

Our annual combined concert is approaching!

Saturday, May 16th

Rehearsal/Sound Check at 4:00. We may adjust this time to 4:30, but plan on 4:00 for now. After rehearsal, we have about an hour break for dinner. UYS provides a sandwich bar in the green room for students and volunteers. The concert starts at 7:00 pm.

The concert is not ticketed, and admission is free and open to anyone! Please invite EVERYONE! Let’s pack the hall!

I will need about 15 parent volunteers to help with food prep and student supervision while we’re at Abravanel.  Generally, you arrive when the students arrive and stay until the concert ends. Please let me know if you’re willing to help.

Parking downtown can be difficult; we generally recommend City Creek. Please allow plenty of time to park, get to the venue, find your way and get settled.

Thanks everyone!

Marty

January 28 Weekly Announcements

We have some amazing opportunities in the announcements so please read carefully as RSVPs are required.

Julia Levin, founder of Cadenza Artists – who we collaborated with us last May at the league of American Symphony Orchestra convention, came with her dog Charlie -who actually sings with her on pitch – to Libby Gardner for the Utah Youth symphonies dress rehearsal. .

Why, you might ask?…
America’s Got Talent is interested in having a string orchestra of 25 musicians fly out to Los Angeles to be taped for the show either the week of March 16 or the 23rd. It would just be a couple of days on all expenses would be paid – if you’re interested or could make it work at all please RSVP at your earliest convenience.

We’ve ALSO been invited to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States on a concert in Libby Gardner Hall 2 August.
We will be performing an incredible piece written by two time Grammy award winner, Composer Christopher Tin. The piece was co-commissioned with Lincoln Center in New York City.
Laura Downs, phenomenal Pianist, educator, and performer will be participating with us.

As this is in the planning stages, we are thinking of having two first rehearsals the 12th and 13th of June – Friday and Saturday at the normal Philharmonic and symphony times. If enough people are in town, we could have another rehearsal, 11 July – Saturday at the Utah Youth time and then the concert is Sunday 2 August, and we would have a dress rehearsal August 1 at the regular Utah Youth symphony time. This is all in beginning stages and is general outline of what might be possible with all of us and our summer schedules.

Please respond as quickly as you as possible so we can move forward with solid plans. It’s pretty exciting!

  • UYPrelude concert is this Saturday, January 31 at 10:30 am at the Fine Arts West building. It would be wonderful to see everyone there!
  • Here is the link to a great recording of the Berlioz. Have a listen!

January 21 Weekly Announcements

UYPhil

  • Back to work this week! Get ready to sight read!
  • The piece is Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique. It would be good to listen to it in advance. Sight reading is a lot easier when you know what it should sound like!

  • Concert week you guys!
    • Rehearsal Saturday morning is off campus. Please check your calendars!

    • We will have sandwiches, chips, fruit, etc. for a pre-concert meal.
    • No tickets required for the concert. It’s free, open admission
    • We still need some parents to help out with concert day stuff.
      • Duties include keeping an eye on kids while they eat and hang out (I know – easy job) and help put sandwiches together during sound check (still easy – really not that much work).
      • I have 3 volunteers signed up as of right now, and I could use at least 6-7 more.
  • Please remember to RSVP for the Madeleine festival. Let us know if you have any questions. Rehearsal Jan. 29, concert Jan 30.

Prelude

  • It is the week before the concert! Dan asked me to pass on a few things:
    • We will play each section of our music straight through, so be prepared for that.
    • The Carmen Suite is available to listen to on YouTube: click here.
      • Please listen before Saturday!
    • All musicians are highly encouraged to work on your music with your private teacher in the next week. It’s a big help!
  • Parent volunteers
    • I could use a couple more parents to help me with food during the rehearsal so we can all socialize a little bit after the concert. It always ends up being a really nice activity, both for parents and kids.
    • Fine Arts West doesn’t have any tables available for us to use. I’m wondering if any Prelude parents have portable/foldable tables we could use for the reception?
